Your novel themes: Character relationships. 4 of 4

Let’s continue to examine how to set major themes to create deeper plot and story development. In this 4 of 4 posts, we will focus on the relationships in which our characters are entangled and intertwined.

For my work, I’m examining relationships through five lenses: family, friends, colleagues, enemies, and hierarchical (or power) relationships. For each character, multiple relationships are in play. For some characters, most of these relationships are positive. For other characters, all of these relationships are negative or overwhelming. One character dominates all of these relationships.

When you think about your story, which relationships matter? Which relationships are great? Which relationships are most volatile?
