Writing with Teammates

In the late summer, three of us decided to get together, to meet weekly as writers to hold each other accountable and to push each other to be better. Tracey & Carol invited me, and I could not be more thankful. Writing is such a solitary experience, and it is so important to get out of your own head and infuse ideas from the outside world–and from others.

We reviewed each other’s work. We asked tough questions. We encouraged each other to go further, to change things we were unwilling to change without external pressure. We told each other what did not work. We challenged each other to write and work every single day.

And the results followed: Not only did I see my work evolve and change, but I saw their stories bloom and grow.

How do you get out of your own head? How do you push yourself to “smother your darlings”?
