The online creative writing program at Stanford continues stun me. It’s only Week 4 of the first semester, and today, my entire novel changed. How? Each of us writers had to complete an assignment where one of our characters wrote us a letter that started: “Dear Steve, There’s something you don’t know about me…”. When I started the exercise, something amazing happened. One of my characters surprised me. He decided to confess he had intentionally committed a heinous act when I thought he had an accident. He completely surprised me! Wait. Who’s the writer here??? I thought I was writing this novel! This exercise turned my novel on its ear. I love this writing program!
